ThreatDown’s 2026 State of Malware reporting highlights ransomware activity involving remote encryption and unmanaged or overlooked systems. Its findings describe the vendor’s observed threat landscape, not a guaranteed outcome for every business. The practical question is whether your organization knows which devices can reach important shared information.

Look beyond the daily laptop

An old workstation, a rarely used server or a supplier managed device may still have network access. Include those systems in the conversation about ownership and protection. An inventory is more useful when someone is responsible for keeping it current and explaining what each device is allowed to reach.

Connect protection to recovery

Endpoint protection, access controls and backup solve different parts of the problem. Ask which devices are covered, who responds to alerts and how critical work could be restored. A service name alone is not enough to answer those questions. The agreement and the actual configuration need to match.

Use the report to ask better questions

A threat report can help identify useful review topics without turning every headline into an emergency. Start with one gap your organization can verify, such as an unknown device or an untested recovery requirement. Assign an owner and a next step instead of simply adding another product to the list.

A practical next step

  • Include spare, shared and supplier managed systems in the inventory.

  • Confirm who owns protection and alert response for each one.

  • Review recovery priorities alongside prevention.
