A smart camera or speaker may be small, but it can introduce another account, app and set of permissions into your home. Before settling into everyday use, take a few minutes to understand what it connects to and who can access it. The setup is easier to review while the device and its purpose are still fresh in your mind.

Start with the account

Use a unique password and available additional sign in protection. Check who has access through household sharing and remove invitations that are no longer needed. The FTC recommends using a connected device’s available security features and keeping its software current. Follow the manufacturer’s current setup guidance.

Match permissions to the purpose

Review microphone, camera, location and remote access settings. Ask whether each permission is needed for the way you intend to use the device. For equipment in shared spaces, make sure the people affected understand how it works. Convenience should not depend on everyone being surprised by the settings later.

Plan for replacement

Before selling or giving away a device, review the vendor’s process for removing it from your account and clearing personal information. Keep the instructions with the device record. A factory reset and an account removal may be separate steps, so do not assume one automatically completes the other.

A practical next step

  • Record the account owner and recovery method.

  • Review sharing and unnecessary permissions.

  • Check the vendor’s transfer or disposal instructions.
