A security upgrade message can be a lure.

Microsoft’s passkey themed attack research is a reminder to verify enrollment instructions, even when the message promises better security.

On September 9, 2026, Microsoft published research about social engineering that used passkey related messaging to lead into identity and cloud compromise. The lesson is not to avoid passkeys. It is to distinguish a legitimate security improvement from an unexpected message using that improvement as a reason to change account access.

Keep the security goal in view

A stronger sign in method can be a good direction for a business. The surrounding enrollment process still needs to come from an authorized source. A message that says an account will be disabled unless you immediately follow its instructions deserves verification through your established IT channel.

Make the real process recognizable

When your organization introduces a new sign in method, communicate the timing and support route in advance. Explain what users should expect to see and how they can confirm a request. A predictable rollout makes it easier for employees to notice instructions that do not fit.

Report uncertainty without embarrassment

If a request looked legitimate and you followed it, tell support what changed. Include the account, time and sequence without sending secret codes. The team can assess the evidence and determine whether an unauthorized method, session or permission needs attention. Guessing that nothing happened can delay a useful check.

A practical next step

  • Verify unexpected enrollment messages with known IT support.

  • Use the organization’s approved setup instructions.

  • Report any unplanned account changes promptly.
