A browser page that flashes a warning and tells you to call immediately can feel convincing, especially when it uses a familiar technology brand. Pause before calling, paying or allowing remote access. The urgency of the message is not evidence that the person behind it can diagnose your computer.

Do not use the warning as your contact directory

The FTC warns that tech support scams can use popups, calls and search results to impersonate legitimate help. Use the support contact you already know or open the vendor’s official site independently. A number displayed inside an alarming page should not become trusted simply because the page looks professional.

Keep remote access under your control

Only allow a connection when you have verified the technician and understand the purpose. If someone unexpectedly asks you to install a remote tool, move money or buy gift cards, stop the conversation. Tell your established support provider what happened and whether any access or payment details were shared.

Save the useful facts

If you can safely capture the message without interacting with it, note the time, website and requested action. Do not keep clicking through the warning to investigate on your own. Your support team can help distinguish a browser notification problem from a genuine device security issue and decide what needs checking next.

A practical next step

  • Avoid calling the number shown in an unexpected warning.

  • Contact support through a known channel.

  • Report any remote access or payment information already provided.
