Start with the right checks.

When Windows starts but behaves badly, a full reset may not be the first choice. Some Windows 11 devices offer a repair that reinstalls the current version while preserving applications, files and settings. Availability depends on the device and configuration.

What to do next.

  1. Record the Windows version and the problem you are trying to fix. For a managed work PC, ask the administrator before starting repair work.

  2. Open Settings, System, Recovery and check whether Fix problems using Windows Update is available.

  3. Read Microsoft’s instructions for Reinstall now under that specific heading. Do not substitute Reset this PC or Cloud rebuild.

  4. If the option applies and you are ready, keep the PC connected to power and the internet throughout the process.

Check the result.

After completion, check the original problem, installed applications and important files. A successful installation message alone does not prove the application issue is resolved.

Stop and get help if…

The option is absent, the PC will not start or the proposed alternative removes information you need. Ask for a repair plan rather than treating all reinstall buttons as equivalent.
