Hard drive used to store computer files

Start with the right checks.

A replacement PC can look ready while a familiar folder is still missing. Start with where your information actually lives: local folders, cloud services, shared drives and application specific storage may each need a different approach.

What to do next.

  1. On the old PC, list the folders and applications you use during a normal working day. Include local Downloads and files outside Documents.

  2. Use an approved backup, external storage device or the existing cloud account to copy the required files. Do not merge a business workspace into a personal account.

  3. On the new PC, sign into the intended cloud service and check its sync status. Install applications from their authorized source rather than copying Program Files folders.

  4. Open a sample from each important folder on the new PC. Check recent documents and any application data using that application’s supported transfer process.

Check the result.

Complete an ordinary task with the old computer switched off but unchanged. Check files, attachments and shared links. Keep a separate backup and agree a retention period before retiring the old PC.

Stop and get help if…

A file copy reports errors, a cloud folder belongs to an unfamiliar account or an application needs a database migration. Do not wipe the old machine to make a deadline look complete.
