Start with the right checks.

Work and school recovery depends on what the organization has enabled. The route available to a personal Microsoft account may not apply.

What to do next.

  1. Check the account address and keep the exact error.

  2. Use the organization’s approved sign in and password reset process.

  3. Complete a verification method you have registered if the provider offers it.

  4. If self service recovery is unavailable, contact the organization’s administrator through a known channel.

Check the result.

Confirm access to the business service and that the expected account and files are present. Check a normal application after recovery.

Stop and get help if…

Recovery requires an administrator, a suspicious account change is reported or several users are affected. Preserve the details rather than repeatedly resetting passwords.
