Desktop printer ready for everyday printing

Start with the right checks.

A new computer may simply need the correct printer added. Replacing a working printer or resetting its network is usually too large a first step.

What to do next.

  1. Connect a USB printer as its manufacturer instructs, or confirm the wireless printer and PC use the intended network.

  2. Open Settings, Bluetooth & devices, Printers & scanners.

  3. Check existing entries first. If the printer is absent, select Add device and choose the correct model.

  4. Follow the supported setup and review Windows Update for relevant updates if needed.

Check the result.

Print a harmless test from an application you use. Check paper size, orientation and the physical printer selected.

Stop and get help if…

The printer is shared through an office server, requires a managed driver or appears under several similar names. Ask the administrator which installation should be used.
